Faculty Marketing & Recruitment update – September

Our first on-campus Open Day event since October 2019

We were excited to finally welcome prospective students and their guests in person on Saturday.

A lot of work went into ensuring that the experience was safe for all involved, and to ensure we could offer a great experience for our guests. As a Faculty team, we were able to work seamlessly alongside SRMA to coordinate course-specific activities and ensure that colleagues within the Faculty were prepared to deliver sessions.

It was rewarding to see prospective students chat to course leaders and student ambassadors and get a real sense of the friendly atmosphere on campus, and learn about what studying in Sheffield might be like.

Interestingly, most questions we fielded were about course content, life in Sheffield and accommodation, rather than potential impacts of Covid-19.  Our student ambassadors did a phenomenal job of putting guests at ease and relaying authentic perspectives on student life.

Our aim was to deliver a smooth customer experience that integrated into the central activity, and it was great to work collaboratively with SRMA in order to do so.

Seeing prospective students get valuable face time with current students and academic staff after roughly two years of online events was wonderful.

New Starter Programme 2021

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health have hosted the New Starter Programme for students starting on health science courses. The programme has been designed and delivered alongside student ambassadors and aims to;

  1. Enable students to feel more confident in their transition to their course
  2. Highlight the range of academic and support services available.
  3. Help students feel involved with, and part of, the University of Sheffield.

This year’s programme has taken a hybrid approach with 181 new students joining us online and 22 widening participation students joining us on campus for course specific tours and a group working session with ambassadors.

The online offering has featured course specific live sessions, blogs and vlogs from current students and showcased a range of support available at the University through 301 and library services.

Since taking part in the programme all participants said they ‘feel like they belong at Sheffield University’, ‘they know where to access support and guidance if needed’ and ‘felt comfortable approaching academic members of staff’.

The programme would not be possible without the help from our wonderful student ambassadors and staff.
