Our PGR Society has had a fantastic year, continuing to support PGR students across the Faculty with all kinds of online activities to help foster a sense of community during difficult times. Quizzes with themes such as ‘Christmas across the world’ and ‘the bright side of 2020’ provided some light relief during a long winter and the popular ‘pizza talks’ series has continued throughout the year, supporting local business The Nether Edge Pizza Company by providing vouchers for speakers and via a prize draw for the audience.
The Society’s annual PGR Day was held online and had excellent attendance. A mix of presentations, discussions and bitesize sessions centered around the theme of wellbeing and career development. Other events taking place online rather than in-person were the ‘Gone in 60 seconds’ research presentation competition and a digital poster competition – both receiving a really high standard of entries and great audience participation. The Society has also held panel discussions, chaired by students from across the faculty, on subjects such as the impact of covid-19 on research data and online vivas.
Rawan Alshalan, Cochair of the PGR Society, said: “We’re delighted with the positive feedback and great attendance we have seen this year. We’d like to thank Think Ahead for providing the funding we need to carry out these activities, which have been vital in keeping the PGR student community together during a challenging time.”
