SMOKELESS TOBACCO: WHY DOES IT NEED SPECIAL ATTENTION?

Professor Kamran Siddiqi, University of York

When: Wednesday 18th December 2019, Lecture Theatre 1, 1-2pm

Where: School of Clinical Dentistry Wednesday Lunchtime Seminar Series

Smokeless tobacco (ST) consists of a diverse range of tobacco products that are consumed by chewing, keeping in the mouth or sniffing, rather than smoking. ST products are consumed by 356 million people in over 140 countries around the world. While ST products are covered under the policy framework of the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention for Tobacco Control (FCTC), their demand patterns, diverse nature, distinct health risks and supply chain require a special policy and practice focus. The talk will explore these distinct features that make smokeless tobacco use a special and challenging problem within public health.
