Musculoskeletal Ageing course a Top 50 MOOC of All Time

MRC-Arthritis Research UK Centre for Integrated Research into Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA)’s Massive Open Online Course “The Musculoskeletal System: The Science of Staying Active Into Old Age” has been rated one of the “Top 50 Free Online Courses Of All Time” by learners in Class Central, the #1 MOOC search engine. The top 50 listing is based on reviews from Class Central users who have taken the course recently.

On the course, hosted on FutureLearn, learners find out why our bones, joints and muscles function less well as we age and discover how best to live well as we get older. The course is delivered by lead academics Lesley Iwanejko (Liverpool), Mike Trenell (Newcastle) and Peter Grabowski (Sheffield) who help learners get to grips with ageing and the musculoskeletal system, the impact of physical activity (and inactivity) on bones, muscles and joints, and the most important nutritional factors for a healthy musculoskeletal system.

Development of the course was led by Ilaria Bellantuono (Sheffield), with production by David Holloway, Laura Giles, Anna Symington and the Online Learning Team at the University of Sheffield.

CIMA is a collaboration between researchers and clinicians at the University of Liverpool, University of Sheffield and Newcastle University, funded by the Medical Research Council and Arthritis Research UK. The Centre was established in 2012 and its success was recognised by the renewal of its funding in 2017.
