The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s Faculty of Dental Surgery, with the support of Dentsply Sirona, has launched their third Dental Clinical Skills Competition. This autumn, heats are being in Dental Schools throughout the UK and the Grand Final will be in March 2017 at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. The Sheffield heat was held on the evening of the 25th October at the School of Clinical Dentistry.
The competition was very successful and enjoyed by all. Twenty five Final Year dental students entered into the event and undertook a porcelain fused to metal crown preparation. The External Examiner Dr Brian Nattress from the University of Leeds and myself assessed the preparation which all were of a very high standard. Chris Orpin from Dentsply Sirona also attended the event and gave an excellent presentation on their new range of dental products.
Our congratulations go to the winner Saman Yazdifar Yates, second place Nathaniel Tidy and third place Katherine Maxwell. All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation and affiliate membership with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Saman Yazdifar will now represent Sheffield in the Grand Final in Edinburgh next year. The final itself will consist of a range of clinical tasks, some of which will be dentally based and other testing general skill. These will be run in the form of a number of OSCE-type stations and will be assessed by members of the College Dental Council. In the evening, he will join the other Grand Finalists at a Council dinner in the historic Playfair building where the winner will be announced.
The winner of the Grand Final will receive a 4-day trip to Dentsply Sirona’s Restorative Forum in Konstanz, Germany in June 2017 including flights and accommodation.
We wish Saman good luck for the Grand Final.
