Cancer Research UK Award

Congratulations to Professor Nicola Brown, Department of Oncology & Metabolism, who has received a grant of £476,000 from Cancer Research UK along with collaborators in Physics & Astronomy and Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology to undertake research into “Mechano-biology of the bone metastatic niche in breast cancer”.

The pioneering project which combines biological, mechanical and theoretical physics modelling approaches in providing the first comprehensive characterisation of the mechano-biological features of the bone microenvironment in breast cancer bone metastatis, will utilise recently available biophysical methods in addition to developing novel technologies which will enable direct testing of the hypothesis that the biomechanical properties of bone are important components of the metastasis niche and that pharmacological interventions that modify these properties reduce breast tumour colonisation of bone.

The project is for a period of 42 months commencing March 2016.
