The vitamin that helps IBS

There’s no known cure for the diarrhoea, constipation and urgency of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but a new study led by Dr Bernard Corfe, Molecular Gastroenterology Research Group, in the Dept of Oncology and Metabolism, found that 82% of IBS sufferers are also low in vitamin D (less than 20 ng/mL). Low vitamin D levels associated with poorer quality of life in IBS patients, these data imply that vitamin D supplementation may improve IBS symptoms in these patients. The work has seen significant coverage in the press (Daily Mail, Daily Express, Huffington Post) as well as being described as “well designed” by NHS Choices.

A larger and more conclusive trial can now be justified
