MRC Clinical Research Fellow Dr Alex Rothman Wins International Award

Dr Alex Rothman, an MRC Clinical Research Training fellow in the Department of infection, Immunity and Cardiovascular Disease (IICD) has been awarded the prestigious Cournand and Comroe Young Investigator Award from the American Heart Association. Dr Rothman is researching new targets in pulmonary hypertension in Allan Lawrie’s lab at the University of Sheffield Medical School.

Sheila Francis, Head of IICD said the award was a major achievement. “I am delighted that Dr Rothman has won this award and I believe it will underpin a successful clinical academic career ahead. I am indebted to Dr Allan Lawrie for mentoring Dr Rothman and I commend Dr Rothman for his outstanding effort. This honour, awarded against stiff competition at the biggest cardiovascular meeting in the world shows that research training in pulmonary hypertension at Sheffield is internationally respected”.

Dr Rothman’s research identified a key new target in pulmonary arterial hypertension called SMURF1 and his work may lead to opportunities for the development of new therapies and new ways to diagnose the disease.
